As the tragic scenes from the train accident site in Odisha, eastern India, unfolded around the world over the weekend, a diaspora group in the UK launched an urgent fundraiser to assist the families of victims impacted by one of India’s worst railway disasters.
Friends of India Society International (FISI) UK have launched a Go Fund Me appeal, which has already attracted over £4,700 in donations within hours of being set up.
“A devastating train accident has occurred in Odisha, India, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. Tragically, there are over 280 fatalities and over 900 injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with families and friends affected by this shocking incident,” the FISI UK appeal reads.
“Undoubtedly, it is traumatic and devastating for both the survivors and the ones who have lost their loved ones. It will take a lot of time and effort for them to heal. In such distressed times, we must come together and lend our support,” it notes.
The fundraising campaign for the victims and their families is aimed at providing immediate aid and relief.
“The money generated shall be used for providing essential support and aid to the victims of this tragedy,” said the international non-profit organisation.
The appeal came as senior British government ministers took to social media to express their condolences and solidarity with India in this time of tragedy.
While Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his support to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed “heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. My thoughts are with the survivors and emergency services.”
Meanwhile, restoration work is underway in Odisha's Balasore district where two passenger trains and a goods carriage were involved in the horrific accident on June 2. The Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed Mi-17 helicopters for the evacuation of the deceased and injured.
The preliminary report on the tragedy said the three-way accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and a goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar Station in Balasore district. As many as 17 coaches of these two passenger trains were derailed and severely damaged in the accident.
