Diwali Basket Brigade: Great example of community spirit overcoming obstacles

Deepak Parekh is the Founder and Chair of Trustees of the Diwali Basket Brigade (DBB), an impactful charity initiative that aspires to engage the community with the spirit of giving that is associated with the Festival of Lights.

In this iGlobal exclusive, the inspiring British Indian philanthropist reflects on DBB going from strength to strength, challenges along the way and the profound sense of sewa that has fuelled its mission over the past seven years.

Q

How does it feel to see the Diwali Basket Brigade grow year after year?

A

It’s really humbling. We started this seven years ago, packing 320 hampers in Birmingham. We wanted to give back to families of all faiths and backgrounds during Diwali. The response has been overwhelming and humbling. That’s the only reason we’ve managed to grow year on year. This year, we’re aiming to pack and deliver 5,000 hampers over the weekend of October 26 and 27.

Q

Can you share some personal highlights along the way?

A

One highlight was the perseverance shown during the Covid-19 lockdown. It was a difficult time, but we continued our work by delivering hampers in pallets, bags, and cards, working with our charity partners while following restrictions. Normally, part of the joy is having all the volunteers together under one roof, but this time we had to adapt. It was bittersweet, but a great example of community spirit overcoming obstacles.

Q

How are your plans for this year’s drive going?

A

Busy. Very busy! We’re full steam ahead. We’ve had a brand refresh, which was done pro bono by Sachin Prama from London. It’s given us a lift in terms of our website and branding. Fundraising is the hardest part – there are so many great causes out there. We’re a 100 per cent expense-free charity, run by volunteers. All of us, including myself and the other trustees, have day jobs. This year, we’re planning to grow in the four cities we operate in: London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester.

Q

What’s your message to first-time participants?

A

Come and enjoy it! Pack the hampers with love. Diwali is about bringing people together and celebrating the triumph of light over darkness. That’s the spirit we encourage, and new volunteers always bring passion and energy to the day.
