Checklist for making smarter food choices over Navratri

Checklist for making smarter food choices over Navratri
Published on

Navratri – which kicks off this week from October 3 – is a spiritual and an important time for many who are fasting over nine days.

Even though it's time of fasting, instead of feeling healthier, my clients used to find themselves gaining weight, feeling more tired, and struggling with energy throughout the day. A common question I get asked is: “How do I stay healthy whilst fasting during Navratri?”

Traditionally, Navratri fasting involves avoiding common grains like wheat, rice, and oats, as well as many vegetables. The meals typically are based around starchy foods such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin. And vegetarian proteins like beans and lentils are not allowed, which has an effect on your energy levels.

Don't make these common mistakes during Navratri:

  • Overeating starchy foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and sabudana.

  • Snacking on too many fruits.

  • Not eating enough protein.

  • Eating too many fried foods like tikkis and puris.

  • Overindulging in Indian sweets made from jaggery.

  • Not drinking enough water.

  • Not having balanced meals. Fasting doesn’t mean you should skip meals, but rather choose the right foods at the right times.

  • Using too much oil when cooking.

If you want to know what to do and get some yummy easy recipes over Navratri, my checklist will guide you to making better choices during this festive time.  It will show you the best ways to stay energised, avoid cravings, and enjoy some balanced meals that keep you healthy throughout the nine days.

And even if you are not doing the fasting, these tips will still be useful to you.
