Indias leading ladies unravel new crime thriller Penguin

Some of the popular leading ladies from across the Indian film industry - Taapsee Pannu, Samantha Akkineni,Trisha and?Manju Warrier - got together this week in a show of support to release the teaser of the upcoming crime thriller 'Penguin'.

In line with a number of recent Indian film releases, 'Penguin' will have a virtual world premiere, scheduled for June 19 on Amazon Prime Video. The psychological thriller follows a mother's physical and emotional journey to save her child, starring India's National Award-Winning actress Keerthy Suresh in the lead.

A Karthik Subbaraj,Stone Bench Films and?Passion Studios production, the film made headlines for being shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.In the film, Suresh is seen taking on a physically demanding journey for the sake of her child.

The teaser starts with breath-taking visuals of a forest, a lake and a waterfall before breaking out into an eerie tone where the lead actress can be seen screaming out a name.

Keerthy Suresh, a successful star from southern Indian cinema - often referred to as Kollywood, was last seen in the 2018 Tamil political action thriller 'Sarkar'. Her latest film's teaser was released on social media with the tag line: “A powerful tale of a mother's rise to a situation when her nightmares come true.

"Behind all your stories, there's a mother's story. Because hers is where yours begins."

'Penguin' forms part of a bouquet of seven new films - 'Ponmagal Vandhal'(Tamil),'Gulabo Sitabo'(Hindi),'Law'(Kannada),'French Biryani'(Kannada),'Shakuntala Devi'(Hindi) and 'Sufiyum Sujatayum'(Malayalam) - releasing direct to digital, given the coronavirus pandemic impact on theatres around the world.

Streaming services have seen a huge spike around the world as the lockdown brought the usual cinema going practice to a standstill. The so-called Over-The-Top (OTT) media platforms, already popular among Global Indians looking forward to the latest film releases from India, have seen a particular boom in recent months as they become the hub for world premieres of Bollywood, Kollywood and other regional cinemas from all over India.
