India issues advisory to alert against fake jobs in Cambodia

Published on

India's Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory cautioning Indian nationals travelling to Cambodia for employment about fake employment opportunities.

"It has come to attention that Indian nationals, lured by fake promises of lucrative job opportunities in Cambodia, are falling into the trap of human traffickers. These Indian nationals are coerced to undertake online financial scams and other illegal activities," reads the statement put out by MEA.

The statement further alerted people to go through "authorised agents" when seeking employment in Cambodia.

"It is also advised that the background of the prospective employer in Cambodia is checked thoroughly," added the statement.

The MEA has been working closely with the Indian mission in Phnom Penh to address the issue and provide continuous assistance to the affected Indian nationals.

Last month, the external affairs ministry rescued and repatriated about 250 Indians, 75 of which were in the past three months.

In a statement last month, MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "Our Embassy in Cambodia has been promptly responding to complaints from Indian nationals who were lured with employment opportunities to that country but were forced to undertake illegal cyber work.

"Collaborating closely with Cambodian authorities, it has rescued and repatriated about 250 Indians, of which 75 in just the last three months," he added.

According to the statement, several advisories have been issued by MEA and the Embassy of India in Cambodia to Indians about such scams. Jaiswal stated that MEA remains committed to helping all those Indian nationals who seek ministry support and added they are working with agencies in India to crackdown on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes.

Jaiswal also stated, "Several advisories have also been issued by the Ministry and the Embassy of India in Cambodia to our nationals about such scams. We remain committed to helping all those Indian nationals in Cambodia who seek our support."

"We are also working with Cambodian authorities and with agencies in India to crack down on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes," he added.
