ReelN Ltd has teamed up with entertainment portal Filme Shilmy to launch a brand new and bespoke live audience talk show in London, ‘The Filme Shilmy Show’.

With ROQ RAW as the official Radio Partner and sponsored by State Bank of India (SBI) UK and Nashtaa Café, the unique concept will provide an opportunity for talent with a South Asian heritage – independent and established names – to promote and reflect on their journeys as storytellers and content creators. The show aspires to bridge the gap between South Asian artistes and UK audiences and hopes to hold regular events, kicking off with one on September 22 at east London’s Rich Mix.

The first edition entitled ‘A Spotlight On British Asian Filmmakers’ will cover three award-winning and acclaimed filmmakers Pravesh Kumar MBE (‘Little English’), Nathalia Syam (‘Footprints On Water’) and Dr Parvinder Shergill (‘Kaur’).

Kumar is Rifco Theatre Company's Artistic Director and Chief Executive. His first feature ‘Little English’, a family dramedy, secured a release with BFI Support had a successful UK run. Shot during Covid-19, the film provided job opportunities to fresh talents and cinema aspirants. Kumar recently completed the successful tour of his play, ‘Happy Birthday Sunita’. Additionally, he is in pre-production and now casting for his new ambitious musical ‘Frankie Goes To Bollywood’, which will hit stages in Spring 2024.

Syam makes her feature debut with ‘Footprints On Water’, the Adil Hussain and Nimisha Sajayan starrer that focuses on illegal immigration nexuses within the underbelly of Birmingham. This hardhitting and engrossing picture has won numerous accolades at international film festivals in New York, UK, Germany and Ottawa.

And Dr Shergill is a BAFTA recommended, award-winning filmmaker and actress. She is the co-producer and lead actor of acclaimed short ‘Kaur’, which also features Nina Wadia. It is now being made into a feature with distribution and destigmatises Sikh women wearing a turban themed around identity, family and faith.

British Indian entertainment journalist-presenter Anuj Radia will be moderating the show, which will revolve around the process of making cinema that is rooted and reflective of ethnic lives within the Western world. The conversation will also touch on the themes that their films showcase and challenges in gaining mainstream traction for independent filmmakers.

Speaking about the new venture, Aman Dhillon, Managing Founder of ReelN Ltd, said: “We at ReelN are excited to be working with Filme Shilmy and Anuj Radia who has been promoting independent talent and new releases through his platform for the last few years.

Diversity in film industry might be becoming tokenism, cautions Sonam Kapoor

“After becoming a well-known and sought after journalist it seems fitting to now develop this as a show with a live audience. The company continues to support new, emerging talent, new releases and this new show concept enables audiences a unique opportunity and immersive experience with talent and gives talent a platform which is often not available.”

Radia said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be launching ‘The Filme Shilmy Show’. As far as we’re aware, there has not been a consistent talk show which celebrates and promotes South Asian talent by a host of that heritage.

“With this venture, we would like to encourage more independent and established creative talents to help bridge this gap and make the cross-cultural representation an authentic one. It is high time that independent content creators and storytellers themselves become the mainstream front of entertainment.”
