Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-talked-about ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ for its dazzling array of female characters also has a set of distinguished gentlemen, Nawabs, who exude regal sophistication. Portraying these characters is a versatile cast of actors including Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman.
As the trailer of the extravagant series dropped this week ahead of its release on May 1, some of the nawabs also shared their thoughts on this very female-centric drama.
Taha Shah Badussha shared: “Tajdar is a remarkable character, embodying nobility, kindness, and unwavering determination. Portraying him has been a dream come true. I'm immensely thankful to Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity in ‘Heeramandi’.”
Fardeen Khan mused: “Wali Mohammed embodies the essence of a nawab, always standing by the women of ‘Heeramandi’. Marking my Netflix debut with such a character feels like the perfect comeback to the screens.”
Shekhar Suman described his character Zulfiqar as, "a towering figure of power and authority, he commands attention effortlessly” and Adhyayan Suman, his son, said his character Zorawar “carries himself with a certain air of self-assurance, the kind that’s expected of a nawab”.
The series centres around Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), who rules over an elite house of courtesans. She schemes, fearing no one — until the return of her late nemesis’ daughter, Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), brings tensions in the house to a boil. Outside, the city is also roiling, with revolutionaries demanding India’s freedom from British rule, with Bibbojaan (Aditi Rao Hydari), one of Mallikajaan’s daughters, joining the fight for freedom. Meanwhile, Mallikajaan’s youngest, Alamzeb (Sharmin Segal), dreams of love with the son of a nawab and yearns to break out of ‘Heeramandi’.
