The announcement of the release date for ‘Emergency’ – a reference to the declaration of the Emergency in India in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi – was accompanied with a teaser trailer earlier this month. The teaser has already garnered much critical acclaims from critics and viewers alike.
The film – due to be released on November 24 later this year – will feature an ensemble cast. Along with Ranaut, viewers will see Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair and Satish Kaushik. Produced jointly by Ranaut’s production house Manikarnika Films and Renu Pitti, the film is also directed by Ranaut. The announcement dropped on the 48th anniversary of the declaration of emergency.
The teaser also unveils a first proper glimpse of Ranaut’s look in the upcoming film. Donning short hair with a prominent white streak – a style which became a Gandhi trademark – Ranaut completes the with a simple saree and large signature glasses.

Since its release two weeks back, the teaser has already gained 3.9 million views, with a prior first-look teaser released a few months back has over 10 million views on YouTube. It is safe to say that this film might be one of the most anticipated releases of the latter half of 2023.
Coincidently, another film on the same topic is slated to release later this month on July 28. The Marathi film titled ‘Aani Bani’ – a term used in Maharashtra to describe the Emergency period – is directed by filmmaker Dinesh Jagtap. The film also has an ensemble cast and will see several renowned names from the Marathi film industry, namely Upendra Limaye, Sayaji Shinde, Pravin Tarde, Sanjay Khapre, Veena Jamkar and Usha Naik among others.
