The highly anticipated trailer for ‘Emergency’, a period political drama directed by and starring four-time National Award winning actress Kangana Ranaut was officially released this week amid much off-screen drama.

The trailer launch in Mumbai took place in the presence of Ranaut – also the film's producer, and key cast members Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary and Shreyas Talpade. The actor-turned-politician addressed the challenges she faced while making the film, including being boycotted by the film industry and expressed gratitude towards her cast and crew for standing by her despite the obstacles.

Ranaut said: "I have faced many obstacles while making this film, which is common with every film. Every film faces a lot of obstacles and then many people come into your life, like angels and they see you through.

“I want to thank my cast. Everybody knows I have been boycotted by the film industry. It's not easy to stand with me, it's not easy to be part of my film, and it's definitely not easy to praise me. But they have done all of it."

Ranaut revealed that her team advised her not to speak to the media, but she chose to do so openly. She claimed that some individuals in the industry try to sabotage films and ruin careers, and that her team was concerned about negative publicity.

She shared: "People who are waiting to overwrite this product with negativity will invest in the PRs to malign the film and to unnecessarily take away from the film. That's our only concern. People in our film industry can be extremely negative to sabotage films and ruin careers. This is why I am a little hesitant otherwise I speak in the Parliament, so there is no issue."

‘Emergency’ is described as a powerful portrayal of one of the most turbulent periods in Indian history — the Emergency of the 1970s. In the film, Ranaut takes on the role of the late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, depicting the intense political and emotional challenges she faced during this era. The trailer provides a gripping insight into the nationwide curfews, the suppression of press freedom, and the closure of offices that marked this period.

Umesh Kr Bansal, CBO of Zee Studios, said: "We are thrilled to collaborate with Kangana on this significant project. ‘Emergency’ is more than just a film; it’s a reflection of a pivotal moment in Indian democracy. We are confident that audiences will be captivated by the story and the performances."

The film explores the multiple phases of Indira Gandhi's political career, shedding light on significant events and crises, including the rise of the Khalistani movement and the broader political tensions and conflicts of the time. With its evocative visuals and dramatic storytelling, the team behind ‘Emergency’ says it wants to transport audiences back to a defining chapter in India's democratic history.
