The UK’s new High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, has set off on the road to her new diplomatic posting with prayers at London’s world-famous Neasden Temple.
Cameron, who makes history as the first female to hold the post, visited the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir with her team from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and performed abhishek before interacting with the volunteers.
The FCDO announced this week that Lindy Cameron CB OBE will be succeeding Alex Ellis CMG in the post this month, as he transfers to another diplomatic service appointment at the conclusion of his tenure in New Delhi.
“Immensely proud to be appointed the next British High Commissioner to India. Huge thanks to Alex Ellis for leaving such a great legacy. So looking forward to working with the amazing UK In India team. I can’t wait to get started,” she said.
The High Commission of India in London extended its “warmest congratulations” to the new envoy to India.
“We look forward to working with you and your team to further strengthen the enduring ties between our nations,” the mission said.
Until February, Cameron was the Chief Executive of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre since 2020. Previously, the experienced professional has served as Director General of the UK's Northern Ireland Office and also had roles in the Department for International Development (DfID).
She begins her diplomatic posting in New Delhi at a time when India is gearing up for its mammoth multi-phased general election, with the first phase set to kick off on April 19.
Last month, the UK-India free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations had been deferred at the conclusion of the 14th round and are due to be picked up against after the elections results on June 4.
“A great appointment to a lovely job with an excellent UK In India team in a fascinating, vast & diverse country. Enjoy it,” was the message of Cameron’s predecessor Alex Ellis.
