As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, Diwali Basket Brigade embarked on its most ambitious charity drive yet over the weekend ahead of this year’s Festival of Lights – distributing 5,000 food hampers to families in need across the UK.
Now in its seventh year, this volunteer-led initiative expanded to four major cities – Birmingham, London, Manchester, and Leicester – bringing communities together to share the spirit of Diwali while tackling food insecurity head-on.
Deepak Parekh, Founder of Diwali Basket Brigade (DBB), said: “Our goal has always been to do more each year. “In 2024, we aimed higher than ever, and with the support of our volunteers and donors, I’m confident we made a real difference.
“Diwali is about more than just celebration – it’s about community, kindness, and sharing hope with those who need it most. No one should have to go hungry, and through this initiative, we’re showing that we’re stronger together.”
Diwali Basket Brigade, run by the registered charity Diwali Foundation (No. 1190061), is on a mission to support some of the UK’s most vulnerable households, regardless of faith or background. Founded in 2018, the charity has already provided over 14,000 hampers, feeding more than 57,000 people. This year, the charity made an even greater impact by distributing 5,000 hampers, a significant increase from the 4,000 delivered last year.
With a dedicated team of volunteers, DBB works closely with over 40 food banks and charities to ensure that these hampers reach those in greatest need. Each hamper is packed with essential food items, offering relief to families and individuals facing hunger during the festive season.

With packing events scheduled for the weekend of October 26-27 in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester, the aim is to unite volunteers from all walks of life in a shared commitment to give back and bring some much-needed light to those facing hardship.
The charity’s vision continues to grow with the support of communities across the UK, making 2024 its most successful year yet. Looking ahead to 2025, DBB issued an early call-out for the public to get involved – be it through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word.
DBB stated: “Every contribution – big or small – makes a difference and helps bring relief to those struggling with food insecurity.”
