Independence Day is celebrated on 15 August as a national holiday in India, commemorating the nation's independence from the UK on 15 August 1947. It marks the day when the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947 transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
It is one of three National holidays in India (the other two being Republic Day on 26 January and Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on 2 October), and is observed in all Indian states, union territories and many countries across the world where the global diaspora reside. On the eve of Independence Day, millions of people tune in for the President of India's “Address to the Nation”. On 15 August, the Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag on the historical site of Red Fort in Delhi. This is followed by 21-gun shots and a recital of the Indian national anthem.
Celebrated widely across the world, with processions and parades, kite flying and flag hoisting ceremonies, the day marks the independence struggle and India's diverse cultural traditions.
This year, under the government's Covid-19 guidelines, celebrations have gone digital with webinars, live concerts and performances - bringing the diaspora celebrations very much in line with those in India.
