Neena Julka founded the SNJ Charitable Trust 20 years ago to spread joy and combat loneliness among the elderly and social isolation within the South Asian community in Wolverhampton.

Her efforts and that of her trust in the field of healthcare and education have now been recognised with the British Prime Minister’s Points of Light award.

Julka said: “We’re delighted to receive the award as we work tirelessly to reduce loneliness and provide mental health support to our community.”

The social worker launched the trust as a family-friendly organisation, arranging community sessions including the so-called “Knitters & Natters” class, holistic Yoga sessions, and bereavement support for the elderly at risk of loneliness. As well as promoting physical and mental wellbeing, Julka’s team also helps people gain employment by providing training and support.

It has also launched an IT programme supported by the local council to help people improve their digital and English language skills. The trust has helped over 500 people gain digital skills and is supporting over 250 people with their mental health through talking therapy, bereavement support, a “Let’s Get Men Talking” initiative and Zoom calls which aim to bring people together.

Stuart Anderson, Neena’s local MP for Wolverhampton South West, said the 10 Downing Street recognition was a well-deserved recognition for all her community-spirited initiatives.

He said: “It is excellent that Neena Julka’s exceptional volunteering work in our community has been recognised with this prestigious award from the Prime Minister.
