Tips to counter chronic inflammation for long term health

Sujata Din

Did you know that what you eat can over time cause inflammation in your body?

"Every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it." This powerful statement by Anne Wigmore, does tell a fundamental truth about our dietary choices.

The foods we eat daily can either be beneficial or detrimental to our health. And in the context of inflammation, this concept becomes particularly significant.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body's natural response to protect itself against harm. While acute inflammation is beneficial for healing wounds and fighting infections, chronic inflammation is different. It's often unnoticed, that can contribute to numerous health issues.

Some of the key diseases and conditions associated with chronic inflammation:

Cardiovascular Diseases: Chronic inflammation is a significant factor in the development of heart diseases, including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Diabetes: Inflammation affects insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. The cycle of insulin resistance and inflammation can further exacerbate each other.

Arthritis: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are characterised by inflamed joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and mobility issues.

Foods That Trigger Inflammation

So, what exactly are we eating that contributes to this hidden health issue? Common inflammatory foods include:

Processed Foods: High in unhealthy fats, sugar, and additives, etc.  These are so addictive and hard to stop eating.

Refined Carbohydrates: White bread, pastries, and sugary snacks can spike blood sugar levels, fostering inflammation.

Fried Foods: They often contain trans fats, and are associated with inflammation.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Excessive sugar intake, in your hot or cold drinks.

You Can Change What You Eat To Transform Your Health

The good news is that you can take charge of your health, to reduce the risk of inflammation through your diet. This is one the things we are going to be looking at in my six-week program.

Think about it: if you carry on with your current eating and lifestyle habits without making any changes, it's unlikely that your health will improve. In fact, it could lead to even more problems down the line. The truth is, the only way to see a positive change in your health is to make a change in your habits. You deserve this – a healthier and happier life is within your reach. It's all about taking that first step towards change.
