My party recognises & supports contributions of British Indian community

Sharada Kamble

As the campaign gathers further momentum towards the July 4 General Election date, the Conservative Party candidate for Leicester East, Shivani Raja, is doubling up her efforts to connect with voters in her constituency.

In this iGlobal exclusive, she outlines her top priorities, how her Indian heritage influences and her vision for the multicultural city of Leicester.

What are your top priorities for the election campaign?

My top priorities for the election campaign are to put communities first, create jobs and opportunities for all, and provide a future for our young people right here in Leicester. I am committed to bringing increased investment to improve our infrastructure, schools, and healthcare. Tackling crime with a local approach alongside our Conservative Police & Crime Commissioner and strengthening community bonds through maintaining cultural events and community togetherness are also key focuses.

What are the concerns highlighted by the electorate of your region?

The electorate of Leicester East has highlighted several pressing concerns that impact the community's present and future well-being. The most pressing issue amongst these is the long-term economic decline that has plagued our city, a consequence of 40 years of poor leadership in Leicester, that failed to adapt to ever-changing economic conditions to adequately support local businesses. This decline has been increased by the departure of key industries and businesses, which once served as the backbone of Leicester East's economy. As these companies close or relocate, the area is left with less job opportunities and a weakened economic base.

The deterioration of infrastructure is another significant worry for the residents. From crumbling roads to inadequate public transportation and utilities, the failing infrastructure damages daily life and deters new investment, further stalling economic growth. Leicester has received a large amount of investment in recent years - the most recent being the Levelling Up Funding provided by the Conservative government, but this funding has been spent in the wrong areas for vanity projects instead of improving people’s livelihoods.

Additionally, the area faces a critical challenge with our young talent leaving for opportunities elsewhere. Many young people, driven by the search for better career prospects, are leaving Leicester East. Losing our young talent deprives the region of the energetic and innovative minds which are necessary for its regeneration and future development.

Is your party fully aligned with British Indian aspirations?

Yes, my party is committed to aligning with British Indian aspirations. As a first-generation British citizen with Indian heritage, I understand the importance of preserving cultural values while integrating fully into British society. My party, which is led by the first British Indian Prime Minister, recognises and supports the contributions of the British Indian community and aims to address their specific needs and aspirations.

How does your Indian heritage inspire you?

My parents emigrated from India and East Africa in the late 70s. They worked hard to integrate into their new community while maintaining their cultural roots. Growing up in Rushey Mead, I benefited from their dedication and the vibrant cultural heritage they preserved. This upbringing has given me a deep appreciation for my Indian heritage and the diverse, multicultural fabric of Leicester.
