Indian student groups and British Indian diaspora organisations have been holding peaceful gatherings and vigils across UK cities this week, calling for justice in the brutal rape-murder attack of an on-duty female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.
The Students' Federation of India – United Kingdom (SFI-UK) coordinated a march by hundreds of students in Liverpool, demanding “immediate and exemplary punishment” for those responsible for this horrific crime. Earlier, the group had earlier held a peaceful demonstration outside the Indian Consulate in Edinburgh and a delegation submitted their memo to the Acting Consul General of India to highlight their demand for justice in a case that has sent shockwaves across India and among the Indian diaspora. The group had also gathered outside the High Commission of India in London to register their condemnation of the attack.
Meanwhile, Medicos Women’s Charity and other organisations gathered for a candle-light vigil at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Parliament Square in London, which was replicated across other cities in the UK and around the world.
“Our protest continues as we are answerable to our conscience. We would not stop unless justice has been meted out swiftly and legislations are in place to ensure safety and security of women,” the group said.
