The second season of ‘Mirzapur’ on Amazon Prime has been making waves since its launch last week. But while the show centres on crime and lawlessness in the north of India, it’s not the men but the women characters that have made a mark with some very stand-out performances.
Sheeba Chaddha, who plays the mother of Ali Fazal’s lead character of Guddu, explains: “The women have completely stood out, and it’s for various reasons. Be it the internal violence, harshness or emotions, there’s not one factor that I can point out.
“But their presence has played a part in expanding the universe. It’s like a separate kingdom in a kingdom. Women are very powerful players in Mirzapur. They may not be overt, but they stand in their own right and separate light.”
The actress, who has been a part of several well-known serials and films, admits that she never imagined that the show would be such a major success – not only in India but also across diaspora territories around the world.
Vijay Subramaniam, Director and Head, Content, Amazon Prime Video India, said: “Gripping content transcends geographical boundaries. The audience is always on the look-out for great entertainment, and good content will always find an audience.
“The resounding success of our first wave of direct-to-service movie premieres is a testament to that. This further reinforces our commitment to offering our customers a selection of riveting movies, cinematically produced, across a wide range of genres and languages.”
The 10-part new season of the hinterland crime drama, where power and revenge provide a way to keep order, will reveal what happened to the infamous residents of Mirzapur, following the aftermath of a shocking Season 1 finale.
The series is produced by Excel Media and Entertainment, created by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh and Mihir Desai.
