Swindon Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre is this week celebrating a new historic milestone after its first Diwali celebrations at the UK Parliament in London.

The organisers said the event marked the first time an organisation from the south west of England brought Diwali to Westminster, where members of Parliament, community leaders and guests gained a unique insight into the festival’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions. The festivities were attended by members of Swindon’s vibrant community and dignitaries including MPs, British Armed Forces personnel, representatives from various national Indian, Nepali, Sri Lankan and even African organisations as well as people of various faiths – Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Christian and Muslim. Hosted by Swindon MPs Will Stone and Heidi Alexander, the event was described as a powerful testament to the UK’s cultural diversity and the contributions of the Hindu community to British society.

Stone remarked: “Diwali’s message of unity and hope is felt deeply at Westminster. This celebration brought together people from all walks of life to share in a festival that embodies light over darkness and community strength.

“I’m honoured to have supported this historic event, showcasing the cultural richness that Swindon and South West England bring to the UK.”

Alexander echoed these sentiments: “It was an absolute privilege to co-host this milestone Diwali celebration in Parliament. The event highlighted the important role our Hindu community plays in building a harmonious and inclusive society and the significant cultural and economic contribution of the British Hindu community.

“Seeing Parliament illuminated by the spirit of Diwali was truly moving, and I’m proud to stand with Swindon Hindu Temple in making this possible.”

Pradeep Bhardwaj, Chairman of Swindon Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre, shared: “This was a momentous occasion for the entire community in south west of England.

“Bringing our traditions and values to the heart of the UK’s democracy is a dream realised, and we hope this event inspires continued unity, understanding, and cultural celebration. The story of Bhagwan Shri Ram is synonymous with civilization and has a fresh appeal for every generation. His message is still relevant, perhaps even more relevant in the current times.”

Ashish Channawar, on behalf of the organising team, added: “Bringing Diwali to the UK Parliament has been a proud and humbling experience for all of us. The celebration symbolises unity, cultural pride, and the collective spirit of our community.
