Sir Keir Starmer reiterates fight against Hinduphobia in Diwali message

Labour Party Leader Sir Keir Starmer used his Diwali message to temples around the UK to reiterate the Opposition party’s commitment to stand firm against anti-Hindu hate crimes.

He said: “I know that many people are targeted based on their religion and that there has been a rise in hate-crimes in recent years. Hinduphobia as with all forms of discrimination has absolutely no place in society.

“The Labour Party stands firm against all attempts to spread hate. We have more that unites us than divides us. Our religions, places of worship and symbols must and will be respected.”

Starmer, who has been demanding a general election to overcome what it describes as the “chaos” of the governing Tories, said Diwali is an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of hope, particularly during this time of political and economic turmoil as seen with the cost-of-living crisis.

He noted: “I take inspiration from the examples of leadership and valour that the story of Diwali represents. It's not just good over evil but how justice will prevail against all odds.

“We all have a role to play for a fairer, greener Britain and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hindu community for your contributions to Britain. Hindus have a proud history in the UK of supporting the vulnerable, opposing injustice and fighting for a better future.

“As you light your diyas over these next five days and pray in your homes and in Mandirs, we will all be minded of the return of Lord Rama and the great triumph of happiness, peace and prosperity.”
