Diwali, the Festival of Lights being celebrated the world over this month, has been an annual fixture in London’s calendar with Diwali on the Square.
This year’s festivities at Trafalgar Square once again attracted thousands of British Indians as well as members of the UK capital’s diverse communities keen to enjoy the dazzling displays of music, dance, food, Yoga and much more.
Hosted by the Mayor of London in partnership with the Diwali in London Committee (DiL) over the weekend, the open-to-all event was made up of a spectrum of cultural grandeur to celebrate the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan addressed the crowds: “This celebration is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness, of good over evil and of friendship over enmity.”
A series of vibrant marquees were set up across the square enhanced the event’s immersive experience, including:
Bhajan Zone: Devotional bhajans, uplifting the spirit of togetherness and harmony.
Glimpses of Goddesses: A sacred space featuring live representations of Hindu Goddesses, offering a meditative experience of divine grace and power.
Puppets: A captivating puppet show retelling the ‘Ramayana’, the ancient story behind the festival of Diwali.
Saris and Turbans: Expert drapers at hand to guide visitors on the art of tying an elegant sari or turban.
Yoga: Guided workshops suitable for all – those new to Yoga or regular practitioner.
Dance: Bollywood dance workshops with a variety of dance styles.
Children’s Marquee: A dedicated space offering activities and entertainment for kids.
Diwali Culture Zone: A series of interactive games and cultural experiences, offering a deeper understanding of Diwali and its message of harmony and giving from the heart.
Now in its 23rd year, Diwali in the Square yet again transformed the iconic Trafalgar Square into an oasis of Indian arts, fashion, food, entertainment, workshops, and much more for all to enjoy.
