Hundreds gathered for the annual diaspora festivities to mark Indian Independence Day, braving the rain to join in the vibrant cultural performances, including classical Indian music and dance from different parts of India.

The gathering, hosted by British Indian community organisations and supported by the High Commission of India every year in August, was held at the Navnat Centre in Hayes, west London, over the weekend. As part of the Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam (Plant for Mother) initiative launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra on World Environment Day, Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami was joined by community leaders to plant and also distribute saplings to encourage tree plantation among diaspora groups.

The High Commissioner unfurled the Indian Tricolour and led the gathering in the rendition of the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana.

In his address to the gather, Doraiswami said: “This day is always an opportunity for us to celebrate and rejoice in the diversity and uniqueness of our beloved India. It signifies what a truly unique country we are.

“We have more languages than any other country, we have all religious groups on the face of this earth represented in one country and every kind of geographic diversity, from icy cold mountains to tropical forests, from equatorial temperatures to deserts. And, we are the only country in the world to have become a democracy even at a time of great poverty and great difficulty.”

A wide variety of food stalls representing the cuisine of different regions of India attracted British Indian families from all parts of the UK for the colourful celebration.

“The Indian community brilliantly showcased the vibrant cultural tapestry of India. Cultural performances and stalls by various organisations highlighted the rich traditions and diverse cuisines from every corner of the country. A true symbol of unity in diversity,” noted the High Commission of India in London.

The community gathering marked the culmination of a series of events organised up and down the UK to celebrate the 78th Independence Day of India, starting with Bhavan UK earlier this month and a grand flag-hoisting at India House in London on August 15.
