Niche UK-based publisher Author In Me announced the pre-order this week of its latest title ‘When Mummy Had Cancer’, an important and touching new children's book by first-time British Indian author Priyanka Pandya.
This heart-warming story, aimed at children aged 5-12, offers a sensitive yet hopeful exploration of a family’s journey through a mother’s cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Told from a child’s perspective, ‘When Mummy Had Cancer’ follows a young girl as she navigates the emotions and uncertainty surrounding her mother’s illness.
The book provides reassurance and comfort, addressing the questions and fears children often experience when faced with such challenges. Drawing from her personal journey, Pandya skilfully blends the seriousness of the subject with themes of love, resilience, and hope. The book also features conversation starters for parents and caregivers to help facilitate important discussions about illness and its impact on the family.
Pandya shares: “Many children don’t have the words to express their feelings when someone close to them is diagnosed with a serious illness.
“This book offers a space for children to understand, ask questions, and feel less alone.”

Pandya was mentored by bestselling author Alan Durant on her journey as a cancer surviving debut author.
“My illustrations aim to provide hope and resilience, especially for those who may feel alone in their journey with cancer. Through colour and texture, I sought to convey the strength found in vulnerability and the light that can emerge from dark times,” said Debasmita Dasgupta, the award-winning illustrator of ‘When Mummy Had Cancer’.
Ekta Bajaj, co-founder of Author In Me, said the book reflects the publishing house’s belief that stories have the power to heal.
She said: “Priyanka’s story not only fills a crucial gap in children’s literature, but it also offers a source of comfort and understanding for families navigating a difficult time. We are proud to bring this book into the world and make a meaningful impact on how families talk about illness.”
